How to Pick the Right Color for Your Decor

Color is a wonder. When you see a color, your brain is stimulated to evoke an emotional response. Our bodies absorb the vibrations of color for healing the physical and emotional. Color activates a myriad of feelings depending on the hue. Feeling such as love or anger; calm or excitement; vibrancy or stagnation. This is why color selection is so important when decorating your environment. Color is one of the most important tools we use in Feng Shui Interior Design to raise the vibration of a space so that our clients achieve optimal health and well-being in their surroundings. Even the Bagua Map is planned according to color. This article will outline what each color of the spectrum represents. How it affects you physically, emotionally, and intellectually.

But first…close your eyes…think of a room you would like to redesign. What is your intention for the room? What is the first color that comes to mind? Think about it for 3-5 minutes. Then…open your eyes and read on!

RED

Most known as the color of passion and love, Red is also associated with the root chakra. The parts of the body it influences are the legs, feet, arms and tailbone. Therefore, red can help you feel grounded. It also evokes a BOLD interior. A person who decorates with red is viewed as some who is unafraid to experiment with color, is courageous and unafraid to put themselves “out there.” If you would like to use it strategically, in Feng Shui, red is integral when trying to incorporate the “fire” element in a room. It is great to use it in the Fame and Reputation area (which is the middle center wall you face when you walk in a room) to stimulate your inner fire, light, or spark.

ORANGE

Orange is the color associated with the sacral chakra, which is the lower part of your belly under the navel and includes, the pelvis reproductive organs/glands. Your intuitive center, your “gut instinct,” your Divine Feminine side. It is the center of personal transformation. When you see the color orange, it may make you feel grounded, warm, energized, creative and joyful. On the other hand, orange can be used to help release trapped emotions such as loss and grief. In Feng Shui, it is associated with the Earth element. If you would like to feel harmony, activate your intuition, and enthusiasm, add a little orange to your life! It works especially well in the center of the room as that area is governed by the earth element, or top right or bottom left area of the home. If you are feeling depleted or low energy - use a little orange to lift you up and help release any inner turmoil you may be feeling.

YELLOW

Known to activate the third chakra, it is associated with the stomach and digestive system. It is believed that by adding yellow to your kitchen or dining room, it will stimulate the appetite and allow you and your guests to enjoy your food more. It is the color of strong will and vitality. It is also viewed as the color of health in Feng Shui. You can add yellow in your home by using yellow sheets so that you regain your health as you sleep. Yellow is the color of joy and happiness, but be careful, too much can cause anxiety and overthinking. Try some yellow accents to cure your winter blues and make you feel happy and optimistic!

GREEN

This is the love center, makes the Heart feel good! If you are not a big fan of green, it could be that you need to open your heart a bit, or that you need some nurturing and self care. Use it in a bathroom to give you a spa-like feeling. Those who gravitate to green are empathic, compassionate, nurturing to others and the self. It is such a versatile color as it varies so much in tone. Dark green can make you feel like you are exploring the forest. Light green reminds me of newly blooming trees in spring. Emerald green evokes an empirical feel (think Wizard of Oz Emerald City). However you view green, use it to refresh, renew, and reawaken your heart.

BLUE

Blue is all about self-expression and communicating your truth because it rules the throat chakra! If you are feeling stuck, or that you have lost the ability to say what is on your mind, try using a little blue in your life. It also embodies clarity, listening, knowledge, and improving relationships not only with others, but within your own inner truth. Dark blue is likened to the water element which is known to help boost your career. Thinking of using some blue? How about in your office to allow opportunities and abundance to flow to you like water? Need to strengthen your debate skills? Tune into the color blue to make you more eloquent. Also makes for a great music room color because blue will help your voice!

indigo

Relates to the “Third Eye” or the point between the eyebrows and center of forehead. It is here where your self-awareness, mental and emotional truth, and clarity lies. Activate this area by infusing your room with the color indigo. It is a good to place in a study and meditation room to allow you to connect to this part of your being and inner wisdom. Also, it is great to put in a room where people will gather like a family room, living room, or dining room because it creates a sense of community spirit. It will allow for deep, meaningful conversations between friends and family members.

VIOLET

The final color and seventh chakra is violet and governs the crown of your head and pineal gland. A person drawn to this color is wise, creative, and sociable. The color can evoke a sense of bliss and highest form . It is a color to be used if you are looking for expansion, creativity of the mind, and thought awakening. Use it in a bedroom to help calm and relax you or a meditation room to help you achieve peace. Use in a bathroom so you can take a rejuvenating bath!
